Team TIGO Honduras Takes 2nd Places in Vuelta a Nicaragua

(Trip exclusively sponsored by the Honduran Cycling Federation)

Nicaragua, September, 2006 -- Here's the personal race journal of Team TIGO member Brian Husen:

"Stage 1 - flat 90 km from Managua to Leon. We got a guy in the break (Cristian Velasques) so i sat on, attacked at 1km Vuelta a Nicaraguato go but didnt know because the finish wasnt marked, sat up, and finished with the pack. Cristian took 6th for the day and moved to the same overall GC.

Stage 2 - 40km TTT but our strongest guy hammered too hard on the climb at the start and dropped 3 out of the 6 including me. We split and then i flatted, with the team car ahead of us. I lost about 10 minutes waiting for a new wheel. We got 4th i think but should have done better. I dropped to 3rd from last on the GC cuz of the flat. The other placings didn't change much.

Stage 3 - 128 km RR out of Managua, out and back. Mostly flat and fast with some rolly hills in the middle. I took the points sprint at around 20km and moved into 2nd for the green jersey.I also became head DOMI for the team at this point and made tons of trips back to the team car for water bottles and bananers (honduran powerbars). It was over 100 degrees and we were drinking 8-10 bottles each at least daily. My shit still smells like bananas too. "Piernita" (Carlos Vallecillos) put in a good attack before Vuelta a Nicaraguathe mountains points but was reeled back in. The day was fast but the group finished together with little change in the general classification.

Stage 4- 130km Managua- Grenada - El Crucero, Long and flat til the last 20km which are all uphill. I was chief domi again, missed the break that ended up taking all the points sprints, I split the field with an attack for the mountains points (well really just motivated some other guys to split it), then ran out of steam at the very early middle of the climb. Carlos Vallecillos took 3rd though that day, i brought up the rear with the spinters. The team was now in 2nd overall.

Stage 5- 100km Circuit Race - Flat rr in Managua, me as chief Domy and beginning to get some respect for my skills from the boyz, but still taking abuse from the natives at the hotel. I was sitting in for the most part, shot up to the front to try for a sprint but they were willing to die for it up there so i backed off. Our # 2 guy flatted so Alfredo Paz and I dropped back to get him. We pulled for about 35km to catch back on to a 45-50km/hr peleton. Vuelta a NicaraguaI sat in for the rest. Roman got in a good break, took a sprint bonus and got 4th at the line.

Stage 6- 100km Circuit Race - This was 10 laps with a long uphill on one side, downhill on the other. I sat on again and tried my legs on a couple of attacks. Alfredo jumped off the front on the penultimate lap too. Last lap, i moved up, made the round about in 10th position then began the sprint. I got stuck in traffic though and had to sit up a bit. I think i rolled in around 9th or 10th. The majority rolled in together with a small group of stragglers off the back getting ready for their flight back to Miami.

Team Tigo finished 2nd so we got some medals and a few $."
